Biography

Layal Ftouni is an Assistant Professor in Gender Studies and Critical Theory at Utrecht University, where she is a core faculty member and teaches a variety of courses in Gender Studies. She supervises dissertations at the MA, RMA, and PhD levels. Layal is currently working on a research project entitled 'Reproduction Life' that explores human environmental conditions in the context of proximity to death and debilitation within settler colonial contexts, particularly in Palestine. Her project, 'Ecologies of Violence: Affirmations of Life at the Frontiers of Survival,' has been awarded a Dutch Research Council VENI grant starting in 2022. Her research interests broadly encompass critical theory, gender studies, Palestine studies, and critiques of political theory and human rights.
