Biography

Laura (Layla) H. Kwong is an assistant professor in Environmental Health Sciences with a focus on exposure to environmental contaminants and infectious disease, particularly their impacts on child and maternal health and development. She is dedicated to designing and testing interventions aimed at improving child and maternal health, especially in low-resource settings. Her work has taken her to various countries including Bangladesh, India, China, Mongolia, Fiji, Indonesia, Peru, and Uganda, where she has addressed health challenges in both urban and rural humanitarian settings. Her research interests include household interventions to reduce air pollution and mitigate climate change within environmental health contexts of humanitarian settings, as well as managing exposure to parasites and enteric pathogens, with a focus on interventions that can reduce exposure to feces in soil and food. She is also involved in management strategies for adult and child feces, including container-based sanitation and child-friendly toilet designs.
