Professor Dr. Lea Frermann

Biography

Lea Frermann is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, where she has been since 2023. Prior to this, she was a Lecturer at the same university from 2019 to 2023 and conducted postdoctoral research as an applied scientist at Amazon Core AI in Berlin from 2018 to 2019. Lea was also a research associate in the ILCC at the University of Edinburgh, contributing to projects in natural language processing and machine learning. Her PhD research, completed in 2017 at the University of Edinburgh, focused on computational models for understanding language acquisition and change. Over the years, she has developed scalable models that focus on how children learn language from noisy data, aiming to improve automatic understanding in various narrative contexts. Lea's current research interests include sentiment analysis, narrative framing, and the evaluation of narrative structures in media. She is actively mentoring several Ph.D. students and has collaborated extensively with renowned scholars in her field, making significant contributions to the understanding of how narratives are framed and understood across different domains.
