Biography

Leah Cowen is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on bacterial fungal pathogens and their impact on human health. The Cowen lab studies various facets of biology and evolution in fungal pathogens, which affect billions of people globally and result in over 1.5 million deaths each year. Eukaryotic pathogens present significant challenges in treatment, with mortality rates ranging from 30% to 90% depending on the pathogen and patient population. Cowen's overarching goals are to understand how fungi exploit their hosts to cause disease and to develop new strategies to overcome drug resistance and treat life-threatening infections. Her innovative interdisciplinary approach includes chemical genomics, functional genomics, experimental evolution, host-pathogen interaction models, microbiome analysis, and structure-guided drug design.
