Dr. Leah Lui Chivizhe

Biography

Leah Lui-Chivizhe is a cultural historian and Scientia Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Languages at UNSW, having joined in February 2024. Her research focuses on nineteenth-century museum collections, particularly from the Torres Strait Islands, aiming to strengthen Indigenous connections to pre-colonial histories and human-more-than-human relations through decolonial praxis. She completed her doctoral research at the University of Sydney and has published a book titled 'Masked Histories: Turtle Shell Masks of Torres Strait Islander People' (MUP 2022), which was highly commended in the Australian History 2023 NSW Premier’s History Awards. Leah is an active member of various academic bodies, including the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and serves on editorial boards and committees related to Indigenous history and studies.
