Biography

Lee D. Baker is a Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Duke University. He earned a Ph.D. from Temple University in 1994 and a B.S. from Portland State University in 1989. His research is focused on the intersection of history and anthropology with numerous publications addressing socio-linguistics, race, and democracy. Baker has been a resident fellow in multiple prestigious institutes, including Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. He has authored several key books such as 'Savage Negro: Anthropology Construction Race, 1896-1954' and 'Life America: Identity Everyday Experience'. He has served as Dean of Academic Affairs from 2008 to 2016.
