Biography

Leela Gandhi joined the Brown faculty in 2014 as the John Hawkes Professor of Humanities in the English Department and Director of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. She is a literary and cultural theorist whose research and teaching focus on transnational literatures, postcolonial theory, ethics, and intellectual history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Gandhi received her B.A. from the University of Delhi and both M.Phil. and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. Prior to her appointment at Brown, she taught at the University of Chicago, Delhi University, and La Trobe University. Additionally, she is a founding co-editor of the journal Postcolonial Studies and serves on the editorial board of Postcolonial Text. Gandhi has been a Senior Fellow at the School of Criticism and Theory at Cornell University. Her scholarly work investigates the disciplinary intersections and the overlapping legacy of colonial encounters, particularly the transnational traditions of anti-imperial ethics. Her significant publications include "Postcolonial Theory" (1998), "Affective Communities" (2006), and "The Common Cause: Postcolonial Ethics Practice Democracy, 1900-1955" (2014). Currently, she is working on a concept of 'likeness' related to ethical thought.
