Leigh completed his PhD at the University of Western Australia in 1976, where he examined the geochemistry of granitoid rocks in the Yilgarn Craton. He initially worked as a geochemist for BHP during the gold boom of the 1980s, before moving to MIM where he held the position of Chief Geochemist and was involved in the exploration of base metals and gold across nine countries. Later, he became the Chief Geologist at Homestake Australia and Sipa Resources. In 2009, he was instrumental in floating the new uranium explorer Energia Minerals Ltd, where he served as Director of Exploration Development and led the technical team responsible for defining a significant new resource of uranium oxide at Carley Bore in the Carnarvon Basin. After leaving Energia in 2013, he has engaged in part-time consulting and research as an Adjunct Research Associate at the School of Earth Sciences and its Centre for Exploration Targeting at the University of Western Australia.
