Dr. Leighann Neilson

Biography

Leighann Neilson is a Professor Emeritus at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University, specializing in Marketing. She has a BA in Directed Interdisciplinary Studies and both an MA and PhD in Sociology and Management from Queen's University. Neilson's research emphasizes historical aspects of marketing and consumption and she has held significant roles in academic organizations such as the CHARM (Conference Historical Analysis Research Marketing) Association. Additionally, she is a founding editorial board member of the Journal of Historical Research in Marketing. Her research has been published in various reputable journals including the Journal of Business Ethics and the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences. Recently, she has focused on topics within consumer culture theory, particularly around the final stages of consumption and the disposal of goods. Throughout her career, Neilson has received multiple teaching awards, reflecting her commitment to education and her skill in qualitative research methods. She has also explored the intersection of marketing with family history and genealogy, aided by grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Currently, she is working on a biography of John Murray Gibbon, a publicity agent for Canadian Pacific Railways, who played a key role in brand development. Neilson also teaches courses on consumer culture theory within the Arts Management minor at Sprott.
