Biography

Leighton Beaman is an Associate Professor of Practice in Human Centered Design at Cornell University. He is a designer, writer, and educator whose work focuses on the history, discourse, and speculative futures of spatial material culture, with implications for environmental responsibility and socially conscious design practices. Prior to his current role, he taught at Harvard University, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Virginia, and the University of Texas. Beaman co-founded General Architecture Collaborative (GAC), a design-based nonprofit that works across East Africa and North America, which has been recognized as a Game Changer by Metropolis Magazine in 2020 and Small Practice of the Year by Architects Newspaper in 2021. His work has been showcased in exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and installations at prestigious venues including Yale University and the Goethe Institute. He is the founder of Alterior Office, a research-based design studio, and has contributed to several publications in architecture and design. Beaman has received accolades such as being named a MacDowell Fellow and a Teaching Fellow in Architecture by the University of Virginia.
