Lenka Vodstrcil is a Senior Research Fellow and Deputy Head of the Genital Microbiota Mycoplasma Group at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, part of the School of Translational Medicine at Monash University. She completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2009 and began her post-doctoral research at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre in 2010. Lenka has established a strong track record with over 110 publications and is involved in both national and international collaborations aimed at improving treatment guidelines for clinical practice. Her research focuses on women's sexual and reproductive health, particularly in the context of sexually transmitted infections and antimicrobial resistance. She leads translational studies addressing common vaginal dysbiosis such as bacterial vaginosis, which affects 1 in 4 women globally and is linked to adverse health outcomes. Lenka's work has culminated in a successful NHMRC-funded multicentre randomized controlled trial demonstrating that treating male partners in conjunction with female treatment significantly improves cure rates for bacterial vaginosis. Lenka’s innovative research challenges traditional views on bacterial vaginosis, providing promising new opportunities for prevention and treatment strategies, particularly regarding Mycoplasma genitalium and its association with antimicrobial resistance. As a member of the ARC ITRP Research Hub, she is actively contributing to addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance in sexually transmitted infections.
