Professor Dr. Lennart Verhagen

Biography

Lennart Verhagen is an Associate Principal Investigator at the Donders Centre for Cognition and the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour. He specializes in Sensorimotor Neuroscience, focusing on understanding the brain and how to treat conditions related to neural function through innovative measures and interventions. His research primarily explores the potential of focused transcranial ultrasound as a non-invasive neuromodulation technique to stimulate deep brain structures with high precision. Verhagen collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, neuroscientists, psychologists, and biologists to develop neuromodulation protocols that enhance both basic research and clinical applications. He emphasizes the importance of optimizing the efficacy and safety of new neurotechnologies while minimizing potential confounds. Verhagen chairs the International Consortium on Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation Safety Standards, which aims to establish and publish expert consensus guidelines involving researchers, industry stakeholders, funders, and regulatory bodies. He also actively participates in community initiatives that support early-career researchers in non-invasive brain stimulation and neuroimaging.
