Biography

Leo Kin-Chong Chao is a graduate student in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he is pursuing a PhD in Civil Society & Community. His research employs mixed methods to study the resilience of individuals and communities in the face of macro political and economic changes, with a focus on Hong Kong. His current research interests lie at the intersection of consumer activism, environmental movements, gender, and citizenship. He aims to explore consumer movements that support local food agriculture in Hong Kong and to examine the emergence of consumer consciousness, connections to community ecosystems, contested claims related to food, environmental justice, and identity within a politically repressive and economically neoliberal context in the 21st century. Leo holds a Master of Philosophy in Gender Studies/Sociology and a Bachelor of Social Science in Sociology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and has experience as a research assistant and teaching assistant prior to joining UW–Madison. His research experiences include projects on the challenges of masculinity in de-industrialized Hong Kong, tensions in gender roles and family dynamics among migrant workers in Southern China, and intergenerational conflicts concerning marital choices in Guangdong, China.
