Biography

Professor Hollberg’s research objectives include high precision tests of fundamental physics and applications of laser physics technology. His experimental program in laser and atomic physics focuses on high-resolution spectroscopy of laser-cooled and trapped atoms, non-linear optical coherence effects in atoms, optical frequency combs, and high sensitivity trace gas detection. His work involves the study of laser noise methods to circumvent measurement limitations of quantum limited optical detection. Technologies utilized include frequency-stabilized lasers and chip-scale atomic devices. Based at the Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory, his research program maintains strong, collaborative connections with the Stanford Center for Position Time. His research directions are inspired by a deeper understanding of fundamental science, which is critical to addressing real-world problems, such as environmental issues and energy concerns.
