Biography

Leo Westbury is a lecturer at the University of Southampton, where his research focuses on lifecourse epidemiology, musculoskeletal disorders, and medical statistics. He began his career as a statistician at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre in 2013 after studying Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath and obtaining an MSc in Statistics from the University of Warwick. His work investigates the statistical methods used to explore the determinants and health-related consequences of declining musculoskeletal health in older adults. His current research includes studies that explore the determinants of bone microarchitecture in the Global Longitudinal Study of Osteoporosis in Women and identify risk factors for low physical performance and sarcopenia in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study. Leo's role involves teaching across the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, where he has taught multiple statistics courses since 2017 and co-led modules such as Statistical Genetics. Additionally, he contributes to research discussions at national and international conferences, and his recent work includes the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on musculoskeletal health. Leo is also involved in applying machine learning techniques to improve predictions of clinical outcomes using medical imaging.
