Dr. Leon Janauschek

Biography

Leon Janauschek is a Policy Officer with the African Health Observatory - Platform Health Systems Policies (AHOP), hosted by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO). His work focuses on leveraging existing national and regional collaborations to form a network of National Centres comprised of leading research institutions in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal. The AHOP draws support from a technical consortium that includes the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, as well as national, regional, and global partners. Leon has a background in international development and political science, having earned his MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. His regional focus is on Sub-Saharan Africa, and he has spent several years working within the Ugandan civil society sector to implement community-based health programmes. He has conducted in-depth research at the intersection of the HIV and COVID-19 pandemics, as well as on the ethics of international health worker migration and cash-based assistance in the humanitarian sector. Leon's main interests lie in the nexus of policy, research, and practice. Before joining LSE, he worked as a policy evaluation consultant, most notably on a project for the African Development Bank (AfDB).
