Biography

Leona Samson is the Uncas Helen Whitaker Professor Emerita and American Cancer Society Research Professor Emerita at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She has made significant contributions to the field of biochemistry, particularly in understanding the mechanisms by which alkylating agents, which are toxic chemicals used in cancer chemotherapy, damage DNA. Throughout her career, she has studied a large number of responsive genes that protect cells from alkylation toxicity and has dissected the molecular mechanisms that signal important downstream events related to this damage. Although she is now closing her lab and no longer accepting students, her work has provided crucial insights into cancer treatment and prevention. She has been recognized for her contributions, becoming a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021, a Radcliffe Fellow from 2013 to 2014, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007, among other esteemed memberships. Her research has had a lasting impact on the understanding of DNA repair and cellular responses to toxic agents.
