Dr. Leonard Kaban

Biography

Dr. Leonard B. Kaban served as the Walter C. Guralnick Professor of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and chair of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He has made significant contributions to his field through work on jaw tumors, hemifacial microsomia, vascular anomalies, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, facial asymmetry, reconstructive surgery, distraction osteogenesis, and orthognathic surgery. His research has advanced the understanding of wound healing and fetal cleft lip models, and he has published extensively, with authored or co-authored five books and 360 peer-reviewed publications. Kaban graduated from Harvard University with a DMD and MD and completed his OMFS residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1974. He has held positions as a full-time oral maxillofacial surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital, where he established a successful OMFS service. He also served as a professor and chair of OMFS at the University of California, San Francisco, before returning to Harvard. His contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the HSDM Distinguished Alumni Award.
