Leonard van den Berg obtained his PhD degree in 1995 at Utrecht and became a Full Professor of Experimental Neurology in 2005. He leads a research group focusing on translational research in motor neuron diseases, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neuropathies. His research aims to identify effective treatments for patients suffering from these diseases by investigating the biological and molecular pathways that initiate and/or drive motor neuron degeneration. His research efforts are primarily based on clinical, lifestyle, environmental, and genetic imaging data obtained from large population-based case-control studies. A significant part of his research activity involves characterizing the phenotype, diagnosis, pathology, and treatment options for multifocal motor neuropathy, which is an important treatable mimic of ALS. He is the principal investigator of the largest prospective population-based case-control study in ALS, known as PAN, which aims to provide insights into the disease.
