Leonelo Bautista is an Associate Professor in the Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His early career was marked by epidemiological studies identifying chronic inflammation as a risk factor for the development of hypertension. His research has explored how factors such as folates, homocysteine, and genetic polymorphisms contribute to the risk of stroke. Currently, Bautista is the Principal Investigator of the Latin American Studies of Obesity (LASO) consortium, which compiles data from over 30,000 adults across 11 Latin American countries. His work has highlighted how high levels of hair cortisol can independently increase the risk of hypertension. In a notable study, he examined the role of stress in developing cardiometabolic risk factors among adults in the Dominican Republic. Given the significantly heightened risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with diabetes and pre-diabetes, his research programs are critically relevant for addressing the unmet needs in reducing the cardiovascular burden among populations.
