Biography

Dr. Dorsey’s work centers on how presidents rhetorically create American identity, examining the rhetoric of chief executives including Woodrow Wilson, John Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. His research notably investigates the rhetoric of Theodore Roosevelt and the use of mythic narratives to reshape notions of cultural identity. His book, 'Americans, Pure and Simple: Theodore Roosevelt and the Myth of Americanism', explores how Roosevelt utilized the frontier myth as a means of creating standards for non-whites and immigrants to achieve identification as Americans. This work won the 2008 National Communication Association Marie Hochmuth Nichols Award for the top book in public address studies. Dr. Dorsey is currently serving as the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Bush School of Government & Public Service.
