Biography

Leroy Gardner is a Professor of Structural Engineering at Imperial College London and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has extensive experience in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in industry training and specialist advisory work. Professor Gardner leads an active research group focused on structural engineering, with principal research interests that include structural testing, numerical modeling development, and design methods for steel structures. He has co-authored four textbooks, seven book chapters, and over 400 technical papers. Furthermore, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of international journals and is on the editorial boards of five others. As the UK National Representative of the European Working Group for the structural steel design standard EN 1993-1-1, he plays a significant role in shaping engineering standards. He has received multiple awards for his contributions, including the IABSE prize in 2017 and the ASCE Shortridge Hardesty prize in 2021. His research group, comprising 20 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, works on diverse topics including metal additive manufacturing, advanced analysis design, and the design of stainless steel and other innovative materials.
