Biography

Les Back joined the University of Glasgow as Head of Sociology in 2022. He previously served as the Director of the Centre for Urban Community Research at Goldsmiths, University of London. Les's early career began in the 1980s as a youth worker in London, where he cultivated a deep understanding of culture, identity, and the challenges faced by young people. His professional experience includes working as a social researcher at the Thomas Coram Research Unit and teaching at the Department of Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths. He has published extensively in the fields of sociology, race, racism, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and urban culture, with eleven authored or co-authored books and more than seventy refereed journal articles. His recent works include 'Academic Diary: Higher Education Matters' and 'The Unfinished Politics of Race.' Les has been invited to present keynote lectures in twelve countries and has contributed to public discussions on immigration and urban life through various platforms, including podcasts. He is also involved in supervising PhD candidates on topics related to multiculturalism, migration, and social issues.
