Biography

Dr. Silberstein is a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital. He obtained his Baccalaureate and M.D. degrees from the University of Leiden, Netherlands, followed by post-graduate training in Hematology/Oncology and Transfusion Medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. From 1983 to 2000, he served on the staff at the University of Pennsylvania where he established the academic transfusion medicine division in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He subsequently was recruited to Harvard where he also serves as Director of the Center for Human Cell Therapy at the Immune Disease Institute. Dr. Silberstein is known for his research on bone marrow, hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, and the signaling pathways regulating their development and function. His work is pivotal to understanding normal and neoplastic hematopoietic disorders, and he plays a key role in developing new cell-based therapies.
