Biography

Lesley James is a Professor and the Chevron Chair in Petroleum Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her research interests focus on sustainable oil production with an emphasis on enhancing oil recovery rates through improved oil recovery (EOR) and enhanced oil recovery (IOR) techniques. She is currently investigating methods to maximize recovery from the offshore Newfoundland and Labrador oil and gas fields, with a particular focus on understanding fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions. Dr. James examines strategies like miscible and near-miscible fluid injection for optimal EOR. She collaborates closely with industry, working on CO2 injection techniques for offshore oil recovery in complex reservoirs, integrated operations for maximizing recovery in remote and harsh environments, and employing water-alternating-gas (WAG) using produced natural gas from Hibernia. Her research also includes EOR screening and production optimization for the Hebron project using Digital Oilfield technologies to enhance production and reduce costs. Dr. James has received the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Distinguished Achievement Award and actively serves as a mentor in various student societies related to petroleum and engineering.
