Biography

Leslie Tung is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on electrophysiology, arrhythmias, and cardiac tissue engineering, including the study of cardiac cell networks. He investigates the functional properties of engineered networks of living cardiac cells at various structural levels, such as single cells, cell strands, 2D sheets, and 3D tissues. By using human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and neonatal rat ventricular cells, his work aims to explore the fundamental mechanisms of action potential propagation and arrhythmias. His lab employs voltage-sensitive dyes and optical mapping techniques to track the temporal and spatial patterns of electrical activity within cardiac networks. Tung’s current research interests include engineered cardiac tissues and high-frequency alternating current cardiac therapy. He has contributed significantly to the field through various notable recognitions and his leadership roles at Johns Hopkins University.
