Biography

Levente Balogh holds a PhD from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. He completed postdoctoral research at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Queen’s University. He is currently a Research Scientist at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and has joined the Queen’s faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, also being a member of the Arthur B. McDonald Institute. His research primarily focuses on the effects of irradiation on the performance of structural materials, investigating how high-energy particles cause changes in the microstructure of materials, which significantly impacts their mechanical properties such as swelling and embrittlement in nuclear reactor components. Balogh's work advancing the understanding of radiation damage is crucial for the safe operation and design of next-generation nuclear reactors. He also engages in astroparticle physics research related to dark matter detectors, employing the Queen’s Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory to generate neutron radiation. His expertise extends to the characterization of advanced materials, including additively manufactured metals, where he applies advanced techniques like X-ray and neutron diffraction to explore microstructure-mechanical property relations.
