Biography

Lewis Bowen is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the Jane Roland Blumberg Centennial Professorship. He earned his Bachelor's degree in 1997 and his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of Texas at Austin. Bowen returned to UT Austin in 2012 after holding academic positions at institutions including the University of Hawai'i, Texas A&M University, and Indiana University. His research centers on ergodic theory, probability theory, and dynamical systems, with a particular emphasis on ergodic theory of non-amenable group actions and geometric group theory. Bowen's contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous honors, including being named a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in its inaugural class in 2012 and receiving the Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems in 2017. His research interests extend to areas concerning dynamical systems and their applications in mathematical foundations and theoretical exploration.
