Biography

Lex Kaper is an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam's Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy, with extensive experience in the study of massive stars. Kaper earned his PhD (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam in 1993 and subsequently spent four years at the European Southern Observatory Headquarters in Garching, Germany. He returned to the Anton Pannekoek Institute in 1998 on a Royal Academy fellowship. Kaper leads significant projects involving the X-shooter spectrograph, installed on the ESO Large Telescope, and is the Netherlands Principal Investigator for the upcoming MOSAIC multi-object spectrograph for the Extremely Large Telescope. His research focuses on the formation, evolution, and fate of massive stars, emphasizing spectroscopic identification of young massive stars, detection of dust waves in Galactic H II regions, and the study of distant galaxies through gamma-ray bursts. Kaper teaches Astrophysics to second-year bachelor students and coordinates a Master's observational project where students engage with the Mercator Telescope on La Palma. He also serves as the Secretary of the Netherlands Committee for Astronomy and is a member of the Council of the European Astronomical Society.
