Biography

Lex Kaper is an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam's Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy, where he focuses on the formation and evolution of massive stars. He obtained his PhD (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam in 1993 and has had an extensive career including four years at the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany. Kaper returned to the Anton Pannekoek Institute in 1998 after being awarded a Royal Academy fellowship. He has been involved in high-profile projects including the X-shooter spectrograph, mounted on the ESO Large Telescope in 2009, and the MOSAIC spectrograph scheduled for the ESO Extremely Large Telescope in 2024. His research highlights include identifying young massive stars and studying gamma-ray bursts. In addition to his research, he teaches a second-year bachelor course on Astrophysics and coordinates a Master’s course that allows students to observe using the Mercator Telescope in La Palma.
