Biography

Ley Sander is a Professor of Clinical Neurology and head of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy at University College London’s Queen Square Institute of Neurology. He qualified in Medicine in 1981 from Universidade Federal Parana in Brazil and completed his medical specialist training in Neurology in London at St Thomas' Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He obtained his PhD from the University of London in 1994 and is registered on the General Medical Council's Neurology specialist register. Sander is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the European Academy of Neurology, and the Academy of Medical Sciences, as well as a member of Academia Europaea. Alongside his UCL responsibilities, he serves as an honorary Consultant Neurologist specializing in Epilepsy at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and he has held positions directing research training programs in neurology and epilepsy in various countries including China, Brazil, and the Netherlands. His research interests include epilepsy services and health on a global scale, with involvement in research across multiple countries since 1994. He was appointed a Professor of Neurology at Sichuan University in China in 2019. Sander has extensive experience directing scientific research initiatives and has played a key role in advancing epilepsy treatment and training internationally.
