Biography

Currently a Lecturer in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, Lhawang Ugyel has held various academic positions, including the Ragnar Nurkse Visiting Professor at Tallinn University of Technology's School of Business and Governance in Estonia during the Spring Term of 2023. Ugyel previously worked at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University, where he served as a Lecturer at the Development Policy Centre in a joint position with the University of Papua New Guinea. His research has extensively covered public administration and management and public policy, highlighting his PhD thesis on major public sector reform implementation in Bhutan, which was also published as a book by Palgrave Macmillan. Ugyel has conducted research on governance-related issues in Papua New Guinea and has collaborated with the World Health Organization on health policy projects in the region. Currently, he is involved in significant research projects focusing on the implementation of the Gross National Happiness Policy Screening Tool in Bhutan and the migration patterns of Bhutanese to Australia and the USA. His studies are funded by a research grant of $46,500 secured from the UNSW Rector's Grant.
