Prof. Li Deng conducts research in phage biology and the virome microbiome. He utilizes single-cell technologies, multi-omics, and culture-independent techniques, along with machine learning, to understand the underlying mechanisms of phage-bacterial interactions and their impact on human hosts. His research group develops novel phage-based therapeutics aimed at preventing infections, eliminating pathogenic bacteria, ameliorating disease severity, and restoring healthy microbiota across various diseases and conditions. Prof. Deng studied Environmental Engineering at Tsinghua University, China, then Environmental Science at the University of Nottingham, UK, and Microbiology at the University of Bristol, UK, where he earned his PhD. He completed post-doctoral training at the University of Arizona before joining Helmholtz Munich as the head of the DFG Emmy Noether Junior group and Helmholtz Young Investigator group. In 2022, he became a chair professor for the Prevention of Bacterial Diseases at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and was appointed joint director of the Central Institute of Infection Prevention (ZIP) in 2023.
