Biography

Li Zhang's research concerns the social, political, spatial, and psychological repercussions of market reforms and postsocialist transformations in China. Her work traces profound reconfigurations of space, power, and social networks within China's 'floating population.' Her book examines the privatization of homeownership, city planning, and the remaking of new middle classes. A recent book explores the unfolding 'inner revolution' brought about by the emerging psychotherapy movement, which reconfigures selfhood, family dynamics, and modes of governing in an anxious China. She is currently working on a project focusing on ethical and technological challenges related to the massive aging of the eldercare system, particularly addressing the growing age-based digital divide. Li Zhang has held several significant positions at UC Davis, including Interim Dean of the Division of Social Sciences, Chair of the Anthropology Department, and Director of the East Asian Studies Program. She is a co-editor for the Issues in Globalization book series at Oxford University Press.
