Biography

Li Zhang is a Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, where he also serves as the Director of the Center for Neural Circuits and Sensory Processing Disorders and the Ph.D. Program in Neuromedicine. His research focuses on deciphering the brain's circuitry and understanding how perception and behavior are generated and regulated by dynamic changes within the brain. He investigates the structural basis of brain function by tackling complex questions regarding the architecture of neural circuits and how these circuits contribute to neurological and psychiatric disorders. Zhang employs a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art methodologies, including in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, two-photon calcium imaging, neural modeling, anatomical tracing, and optogenetics, to build an integrative understanding of neural circuits composed of diverse cell types. Over the past decade, he has dedicated significant efforts to developing molecular, genetic, and imaging techniques aimed at elucidating the neural circuits that underlie local neuronal computation and behavioral control.
