Biography

Lia van Wesenbeeck is an Associate Professor in Development Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Director of the Amsterdam Centre for World Food Studies. She is responsible for the management and coordination of day-to-day activities within the Centre. She obtained her PhD in 2000 from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has extensive experience in general equilibrium theory, particularly focusing on the representation of non-market and market choices as well as modeling the water-energy-food nexus. She lectures on food security economics both in the Netherlands and abroad and has supervised over 35 Bachelor's and Master's students, along with several PhD candidates focusing on the impacts of climate change on the WEF nexus. Currently, she is the international project leader for the EU-sponsored research project "Feed4Food" (2024-2026), which aims to develop inclusive and sustainable urban agriculture in European cities. Additionally, she serves on various national and international boards and committees related to food security and contributes to the evaluation of Dutch development programs in the field.
