Biography

Liam Butler is an Associate Professor in structural materials engineering at York University's Lassonde School of Engineering. His research expertise is centered on developing, investigating, and implementing climate-resilient intelligent structures and material systems. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, where his research involved recycling old concrete structures into new concrete, integrating materials characterization, structural component testing, and statistical analysis. Prior to his Ph.D., he worked as a structural engineer in Toronto, designing a variety of complex structures and consulting on challenging concrete materials-related projects. An active member of the American Concrete Institute's Technical Committee 555 on concrete recycled materials, Dr. Butler also completed postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge in the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC). His leadership in CSIC focused on research projects spanning infrastructure sensing, particularly related to bridges and prestressed concrete railway ties with embedded fibre-optic sensor networks. Dr. Butler leads the Sustainable Concrete Structures Group and established the Climate-Data-Driven Design (CD3) Facility for Built Infrastructure, studying the impact of varying climate on engineered natural materials and structures, collaborating with both industry and academic partners globally from institutions like the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.
