Liam Rooney is a Research Fellow in Bacteriology at the University of Glasgow's School of Infection & Immunity. He focuses on the development and application of advanced optical imaging methods in microbiology. Liam earned his BSc (Hons) in Cell & Molecular Biology from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2016 and subsequently completed his PhD in Microbiology & Biological Imaging at the University of Strathclyde in 2020. His doctoral research involved developing multi-wavelength interference reflection microscopy to study Myxobacterial motility and creating three-dimensional mimetic culture platforms for soil ecology. In his postdoctoral position at Heriot-Watt University, he utilized super-resolution microscopy to investigate Type VI Secretion System-mediated interkingdom interactions. His lab currently explores spatial dynamics of infection at various scales, employing cutting-edge imaging methods to address complex challenges related to infection biology, antimicrobial resistance, and image-based diagnostics. An active member of the Microbiology Society and a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, Liam has received several accolades, including the Scottish Microscopist of the Year for 2023/24. He has also organized the Strathclyde Optical Microscopy Course, a comprehensive training program focused on optical microscopy techniques.
