Dr. Liam Shields

Biography

Liam Shields is a Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Manchester. He was born and raised in mid-Cheshire. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Philosophy from Keele University and a Master’s degree in Political Philosophy from the University of York, where he was awarded the C & J. B. Morrell scholarship. He completed his PhD at the University of Warwick, focused on Sufficientarianism. While submitting his PhD, he began an Early Career Fellowship at the University of Warwick, researching social justice measures for children. In 2012, he joined the University of Manchester as a Lecturer in Political Theory and has since been involved in various academic projects, including a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. His research interests primarily revolve around parental rights, social justice, and educational equity, with a notable emphasis on the principles of fairness and opportunities for all individuals. His recent work has critiqued the admission processes at elite universities, arguing for a more equitable evaluation of student candidates. In 2016, he published a book titled "Enough: Sufficiency Demand Justice." He aims to continue developing rigorous frameworks for understanding parental rights and educational opportunities in the context of distributive justice.
