Dr. Lidewij Van Gils

Biography

Lidewij van Gils is an Assistant Professor specializing in Latin at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities. She has a robust background in the study of Classical Latin, Rhetoric, and Latin Linguistics, with a focus on the works of Cicero. Lidewij teaches courses that delve into Latin language and culture and actively participates in interdisciplinary education programs, including the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology. Her academic journey includes a PhD obtained in 2009 from Vrije Universiteit, where her dissertation centered on Cicero's forensic speeches. Lidewij has a notable history of research in communicative strategies within classical Latin prose, employing frameworks from pragmatics and cognitive linguistics. She has led efforts to innovate teaching methodologies in Classics and has been recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2017 at Vrije Universiteit. Furthermore, Lidewij supervises various PhD projects, focusing on topics such as Late Antique citizenship discourses and stylistic analysis of Livy's narratives. She is also involved in collaborative research initiatives aimed at enhancing the understanding and pedagogy of Classical languages and cultures.
