Lidwien Smit is a Full Professor of Health Environmental Epidemiology at Utrecht University, leading the Health Microbial group within the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences. Her research centers on respiratory molecular epidemiology, with particular emphasis on environmental and occupational exposures that influence human health. Utilizing an interdisciplinary health approach, she investigates public health risks at the human-animal-environmental interface. As principal investigator, Lidwien oversees a comprehensive, long-term research program examining the impact of agricultural emissions on respiratory health, antimicrobial resistance, and infectious diseases, particularly in populations residing in livestock-dense regions. She leads the Clean Air Everyone project, which evaluates the effectiveness of ventilation and air-cleaning technologies in enhancing indoor air quality and mitigating airborne transmission of respiratory pathogens. In addition to her research and teaching responsibilities, she serves as Theme Leader for Health at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and as a Scientific Director and Executive Board member of the Netherlands Center for One Health (NCOH). Lidwien also chairs the ZonMw VENI grant Committee and is a member of the scientific advisory committee for the Netherlands Lung Foundation, as well as the Health Council Netherlands Dutch Expert Committee on Occupational Safety. She earned her MSc with highest honors in Environmental Sciences from Wageningen University and completed her PhD in Epidemiology at Utrecht University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) in Paris. She has authored over 150 scientific publications.
