Dr. Lidya Ayuningtyas

Biography

Lidya Pawestri Ayuningtyas is a third-year PhD student specializing in Translation Studies at the University of Western Australia, supported by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education. Her PhD research aims to explore the translation of sex-related language in young adult novels from English to Indonesian, focusing on societal norms and cultural considerations at the time of publication. This study contributes to the understanding of translation practices, particularly self-censorship, and provides insights for translators dealing with taboo topics, especially in the context of Indonesian teenage literature. Lidya has prior academic experience in Australia, where she earned a Master’s degree in TESOL from University College London and a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Universitas Indonesia. In addition, she holds a diploma in Publishing from Politeknik Negeri Jakarta. Between 2019 and 2020, she served as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at the University of Michigan. Lidya has worked as a lecturer for English Translation units at Politeknik Negeri Jakarta and continues to teach Indonesian as a foreign language in Indonesia, the USA, and Australia. Besides her academic roles, she is a freelance translator and an author of young adult novels, short stories, and poetry published in Indonesia and elsewhere. Her expertise also aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on education and translation-related initiatives.
