Dr. Liesbet Van Zoonen

Biography

Liesbet van Zoonen is a professor of Sociology and the dean of the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She joined the Department of Popular Culture in March 2009 after having worked at the University of Amsterdam as the head of the Department of Communication until December 2015, and as a professor of Media Communication at Loughborough University in the UK. Professor van Zoonen has held several prestigious positions at universities around the world, including as a professor II at Oslo University and a visiting professor at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, as well as at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Germany. Her research spans a wide range of topics within the social sciences and humanities, focusing on the intersection of digital popular culture and civic understanding in relation to social participation. Currently, her work emphasizes civic engagement and governance within smart cities. Van Zoonen leads the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre BOLD Cities.
