Liesl Gambold is an anthropologist whose earlier work in Russia focused on economic and social responses to political and market restructuring, as well as gender relations in rural communities. She has studied the social structures of Russian village life and the local residents’ resistance to changing power structures within rural agricultural sectors. Her research has expanded to explore emotional ties in collective work and property, examining the intersection of emotion and governance in socialist cultures. Currently, her anthropological research investigates the implications of aging, mobility, and housing, particularly in the context of international retirement migration. As baby boomers transition into retirement, Gambold emphasizes the emerging demographic shifts and their repercussions in policy-making and academic discussions. She has conducted significant research on Canadians and Americans who have migrated to southern France and Spain, along with interviewing LGBT residents in aging housing facilities across Europe. She serves as a primary qualitative researcher in interdisciplinary projects and is a research associate at Dalhousie’s Jean Monnet European Union Center of Excellence, in addition to coordinating the Gender & Women's Studies Program since 2018.
