Biography

Lijia Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Western University. His research focuses on the development of light-emitting inorganic nanomaterials with applications in bioimaging, sensing, optoelectronics, and optical information storage. Utilizing modern spectroscopy techniques such as steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, he analyzes the luminescence mechanisms of materials to guide the design of new synthesis strategies that control luminescence properties. One of his key research areas is Persistent luminescence (PersL) nanophosphors, which exhibit long-lasting luminescence after excitation ceases, particularly in the near-infrared (NIR) region, making them suitable for deep-tissue imaging. Liu also works with calcium hydroxyapatite-based luminescent composites and collaborates with other research groups to develop novel in situ and operando spectroscopy/microscopy techniques at synchrotron facilities. As a passionate educator, he teaches courses in Environmental Chemistry, Instrumental Analytical Chemistry, Optical Spectroscopy, and Surface Chemistry.
