Biography

LiLi Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Dalhousie University. Her research engages critical analyses of contemporary neoliberalism within the context of multiculturalism, specifically concerning Asian American family kinship and North American culture. Johnson's ongoing book manuscript, titled 'Technologies of Family: Asian American Racial Formation and Making Kinship,' traces the construction of Asian American family as a systematic site of racial formation in American culture. She argues that kinship is newly constructed through what she calls 'technologies of family' – systems of government bureaucracy, immigration policy, photography, online profiles, and ancestry tests that serve as case studies. Additionally, she explores the cultural genealogy of the term 'transracial' in North American adoption practices, examining narratives of mixed-race adoptive families in the context of domestic and transnational adoptions. Johnson teaches courses on Asian North American feminisms, gender and sexuality, digital media, visual culture, and photography, within the cross-appointed Program in Gender & Women's Studies.
