Dr. Lilia Cortina

Biography

Lilia Cortina is the University Diversity Social Transformation Professor of Psychology, Women’s & Gender Studies, and Management Organizations at the University of Michigan. As an organizational psychologist, she investigates how individuals are subordinated, violated, and relegated to the margins of organizational life. Her work addresses interpersonal indignities ranging from subtle social slights to overt harassment and violence. Lilia’s scholarship covers a broad spectrum of issues, with particular emphasis on sexual harassment and workplace incivility. She has published extensively, with over 100 publications, and has received recognition for her outstanding contributions to the field, including being named a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Her research has had significant impact, extending into both academic and professional spheres, and she has served as an expert witness in various venues, helping to translate scientific findings into policy and legal decision-making. Notably, Lilia provided expert testimony before the U.S. Department of Defense's Judicial Proceedings Panel and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace. In 2018, she contributed to a landmark report on sexual harassment by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
