Dr. Lilie Chouliaraki

Biography

Professor Lilie Chouliaraki holds the Chair in Media Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in Linguistics from the University of Athens, followed by a Master's and PhD from Lancaster University. With a strong interdisciplinary background, she applies Social and Cultural Theory, Moral Philosophy, and Sociology to her research. She is particularly interested in how media shapes ethical and political relationships, especially concerning the vulnerable populations in the Global South and North. Her notable works include the award-winning book 'Wronged: Weaponization of Victimhood', published with Columbia University Press in 2024, and 'The Ironic Spectator: Solidarity in the Age of Post-Humanitarianism'. Professor Chouliaraki's influence extends into critical discourse analysis and visual communication, with numerous publications highlighting the dynamics of human vulnerability in media. She also supervises doctoral students on various contemporary topics within media and communication.
