Biography

Lilla Balint specializes in postwar contemporary German literature and culture, with a critical focus on post-1989 literary production. Her research adopts a transnational comparative orientation, emphasizing the long history of narrative forms and the emergence of digital writing. Balint's work also explores literary narrative theory, aesthetics, politics, and critical theory. Currently, she is completing a book manuscript titled “After 1989: History, Temporality, Contemporary,” which addresses aesthetic form and theorizes ideas of historicity that emerge in literature from Central Europe following the fall of the Berlin Wall. She has contributed writings to various journals, including Critical Quarterly and German Quarterly, and is involved in an editorial project examining contemporary literature through a temporal lens. Balint is also engaged in public humanities, having organized literary events in San Francisco and at the Goethe Institute. Her research has received support from institutions such as the Hellman Family Foundation and the Townsend Center for the Humanities. Balint holds a Ph.D. in German Studies from Stanford University and has previously held faculty appointments at Vanderbilt University and Hamilton College.
