Biography

Lillian Chin is an Assistant Professor and Texas Instruments/Kilby Fellow in the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, starting in Fall 2024. She completed her Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. Lillian has worked as a Schmidt Science Fellow at the National Institutes of Health, where she collaborated with Leo Cohen and Tom Bulea. She has received numerous fellowships, including the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship, and the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the 2019 IEEE Robosoft Poster Award, the 2019 ACM CS Law Paper Award, and the 2022 Leventhal City Prize. Lillian emphasizes research mentorship, having mentored 21 undergraduate students, 2 master's students, and a Ph.D. student, contributing to writing 8 papers. A third of her students are women or gender minorities, and half are underrepresented racial minorities. Her research interests include Soft Robotic Actuators, Force and Tactile Sensors, Computational Design, and Robotic Manipulation.
